Born in Wales in 1973 into a non-horsey family it became apparent from an early age that Mat Hicks was mad on horses and it all started with Camellia, a Shetland pony. Matt has worked with horses all his life and trained with the late Debbie Johnston at Langford Common Stud near Salisbury, Wiltshire. He began an eventing career when he was 21, completed Blenheim CCI3* in 2000 and 2001 and competed regularly in Europe. Then in 2002/3, he progressively made the decision to focus on dressage.
Since then, Matt has been successfull based at a number of small yards, before taking on Hurstbourne Equestrian Centre, near Whitchurch, Hampshire at the end of 2011. Since then, he has enjoyed continued success, winning four National titles – Albion Medium Open 2012, Spillers Freestyle Open 2012, Hickstead Masters Champion 2012, Spillers Freestyle Open 2013 and Albion Medium Open 2014. Matt also competes internationally, winning the Nice CDI Freestyle Championships in 2013.
Matt first competed at Grand Prix on ex-eventer Highmark, who he trained from Novice to Grand Prix. He regularly competes at home and abroad, and enjoys training horses and riders at all levels.
